“Interesting signing for United” – Alan Smith waxes lyrical about midfield target

Former Manchester United ace Alan Smith has been speaking about Declan Rice, a midfielder that a number of fans are hoping we sign this summer.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why United need a player like Rice, although The Mirror has warned that there will be stiff competition for his signature from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

We can all accept that Nemanja Matic, 33, is well past his best and that the squad lacks defensive midfielders. The Serb is unable to play week in week out and that has shown to be one of our key weaknesses this season.

Alan Smith has been speaking about his former club and was asked specifically about one of our midfield targets for the summer.

Speaking to offers.bet, Smith said: “I think Declan Rice’s performances for West Ham have been outstanding, and this season he has pushed on again. Since the EUROS, he’s grown in stature and grown in confidence. He’s a player that is continually linked with a lot of clubs, but he would definitely be an interesting signing for United.

“There are other players that are spoken about, but I think getting people off the wage bill was a bigger thing for them, and then to re-build with players that the manager or new manager and the club collectively want. If they’re going to bring in four or five players and then appoint a new manager, it would seem to be a bit of a waste.”

Rice is a popular choice for the midfielder United need in the summer.

The way in which he bossed the midfield at Old Trafford two weeks was admirable, even more so as United took all three points from the game.
