“Open race” – Fabrizio Romano claims United have discussed move for Bundesliga midfielder

Denis Zakaria is a midfielder in high demand.

After impressing in the Bundesliga for Borussia Monchengladbach, it looks like the Switzerland international is ready for a move to a bigger club, with his current deal set to expire in six months.

This could make the Swiss midfielder one of the most tempting free agents on the market this summer, or will someone try swoop in and sign him mid-season to guarantee Monchengladbach a transfer fee in exchange.

Ralf Rangnick apparently appreciates the player, who he will know from watching in Germany, but it remains to be seen if he will be given the transfer funds needed to get a deal done this month.

Transfer guru Romano tweeted: “Manchester United have made no bid for Denis Zakaria as things stand. The option has been discussed as he’s appreciated by Rangnick – but there’s still no official bid to Borussia.

“More than four clubs are already working to sign Zakaria as free agent in July. Open race.”

A midfielder should be at the priority top of the list for United given our struggles in that department for years.

No manager has been able to find the right balance — from David Moyes to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, not even Louis van Gaal or Jose Mourinho.

It would make sense for Rangnick to sign a player he knows can carry out his demands, but what if the next manager doesn’t rate that player?

United will be hiring a new man again in six months.
