Manchester United youngster joins Bournemouth on loan after Swansea recall

Manchester United right-back Ethan Laird has joined Bournemouth on loan until the end of the season.

The promising 20-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at fellow Championship club Swansea, but he has moved to Bournemouth mid-way through the season in another progressive step in his career.

You might ask why United took Laird from one Championship club to another, but Bournemouth look set challenge for the title this season and they want the young right-back to help give them every chance of achieving that.

Laird was developing well at 17th placed Swansea after kicking on from his loan spell at MK Dons last season, where he made 20 appearances in League One.

The Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake said (via the club’s official website): “Ethan is an exciting prospect and we are very pleased to have brought him on board.

“His style of play fits perfectly with ours and I’m confident he can help us build on what has been an excellent first half of the season.

“He has impressed during his two previous loan spells and is very well thought of at Manchester United, so we couldn’t be happier to have secured his services.”

It would be huge for Laird if he can gain title-winning experience during his time with the Cherries, who are trying to gain promotion back in the Premier League. He will be playing with players expecting to be top-flight stars next season and that is exactly the sort of competition he needs right now.

Good move by United, although I doubt too many will be happy about it in Swansea.
