Mauricio Pochettino replaced as leading candidate for Manchester United job

Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag is the leading candidate to become Manchester United manager in the summer.

If true, it means Manchester United have cooled their interest on Mauricio Pochettino again, with the Argentine set to miss out on the job for a second time.

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November it looked like Pochettino was the main candidate, but time has passed, and The Times now claim the Argentine has been replaced as United’s first choice.

Ten Hag is now the big name in the hat.

The Dutchman is widely regarded as one of the best up and coming managers in football, after winning two league titles with Ajax since he took charge of the Eredivisie club in 2017.

Speaking in December, Ten Hag said (via talkSPORT): “I think I’m ready for it. I would be happy to take on that challenge.

“But I’m not chasing it. If it turns out that that step will never come, I will not say that my coaching career has failed.

“But I think I have enough competences to take on that challenge.”

Both Pochettino and Ten Hag will be aiming to add a league title to their CV before the season ends, too.

SN’s verdict…

What a huge job it will be for whoever takes it.

Ten Hag won’t have the same level of security he has at Ajax, where they have football people in place to make big decisions, whereas at United he will need to cosy up with Richard Arnold.

At least Pochettino would know what to expect in the Premier League.
