(Video) Saint-Maximin scores as Varane blunder leads to Newcastle goal

Newcastle United took the lead at St James’ Park with less than seven minutes on the clock thanks to Allan Saint-Maximin.

It came after a rare mistake from Raphael Varane, making his first appearance since recovering from injury, with a poor attempt to hold off Callum Wilson.

Sean Longstaff powered through the French centre-back to win back possession.

The Newcastle midfielder found Allan Saint-Maximin and he drifted inside before curling the ball into the corner.

Unfortunately, we can’t sit here and argue how the Reds should be ahead as we’ve been abysmal from first minute. No fan could take a positive from that opening 45 minutes.

Hopefully Ralf Rangnick can find a way to turn things around after the break.
