Owen Hargreaves sends warning to Manchester United about Atletico Madrid

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes Atletico Madrid will be a real test in the Champions League last 16.

The Reds were paired with the La Liga champions after an embarrassing day for UEFA in Nyon saw the draw have to be done for a second time.

United were accidentally drawn against Villarreal, who we’ve faced already in the group stages, before being left out of the pot to draw Atletico Madrid.

UEFA were at fault for two of these mistakes, so they had no other choice but to re-draw the teams at 2pm on Monday.

The second draw saw United get Atletico Madrid, who finished second in their group behind Liverpool, and I think most fans are happy with that rather than playing PSG again because we’ve played them a lot in recent years.

This is something completely different and trips to Madrid are always brilliant.

Owen Hargreaves doesn’t know which way the tie will go – but the retired footballer turned BT Sport pundit notes that it should be easier to beat Atletico Madrid than PSG.

He said (via Manchester Evening News): “They’ve [Atletico Madrid] got some world class players, Joao Felix, Luis Suarez. Jan Oblak is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“It’s slightly easier for United, but it’s a case of flipping a coin of who will go through. It’s a huge clash in styles between Rangnick and Simeone.”
