Ajax interested in signing Dean Henderson in January

Dutch giants Ajax want Dean Henderson on loan in January, according to reports.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Ajax’s long-standing interest could see Henderson join them in the January transfer window, but United have yet to make their decision.

The promising goalkeeper, aged 24, has only played once all season and it doesn’t look like he will taking David de Gea’s spot anytime soon. He needs more game time to develop and this isn’t some youngster who doesn’t have any experience anymore.

It wasn’t a long time ago that Henderson was seen as one of the best keepers in the top-flight while on loan at Sheffield United.

A year ago it looked like Henderson could move ahead of De Gea in the pecking order, but that was before the Spaniard’s form improved, with Victor Lindelof going as far to say he is back to being the best keeper in the world.

This opens the door for Henderson to go out on loan again. Why not go and experience football in the Netherlands and try come back better than before to challenge De Gea?

A move would see Tom Heaton promoted to backup keeper at Old Trafford.

Ajax only recently saw the return of keeper Andre Onana after Maarten Stekelenburg was ruled out for the rest of the season with injury. UEFA handed Onana a year-long ban in February for violating doping rules but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced the suspension to 9 months following an appeal.

The Cameroon international’s contract with Ajax is set to expire next summer.

Henderson is expected to start in Manchester United’s next match on Wednesday night against Young Boys in the Champions League.
