Real Madrid identify possible Pogba alternative as pursuit for midfielder hots up

Real Madrid is on the lookout for a long-term replacement for Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.

Although Los Blancos have been linked with sensational moves for Leicester City’s Wilfried Ndidi and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, according to a recent report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, the La Liga giants’ preferred choice is Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Red Devils themselves have been linked with Tchouameni in recent times (90min).

When it comes to midfield, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s options in the middle of the park are relatively poor – especially considering both Fred and Scott McTominay have endured tough starts to the season.

Elsewhere, Donny van de Beek continues to be frozen out and Nemanja Matic is now an ageing shadow of his former self.

With the Red Devils expected to delve into the upcoming windows in search of a new, commanding midfielder, their pursuit of one of Europe’s finest prospects could lead them into direct battle with Real Madrid.

Manchester United and Real Madrid are not the only two clubs believed to be chasing Tchouameni though – it has also been noted that Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle United are all keen too.

Nevertheless, though, should Los Blancos eventually win the race for Tchouameni, the United faithful will be wondering what that could mean for the future of Pogba, who is out of contract at Old Trafford next summer.
