Manchester United make contact with Bundesliga club over defensive midfielder

Manchester United’s midfield has been a cause for concern over recent years and amid last summer’s spending spree, a defensive midfielder remains one of the missing cogs in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s machinery.

Solskjaer’s rigid 4-2-3-1 system includes two defensive midfielders but neither Scott McTominay or Fred have impressed to the point where they can be trusted without a partner.

Manchester United have been strongly linked with Declan Rice in the past but the England international’s high price could prove to be a big obstacle.

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria is regarded as one of the most promising midfielders in the Bundesliga and according to reports, there have been contacts between the German club and the Old Trafford hierarchy over the 24-year-old.

That’s according to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, as seen above, who claims that Juventus and Manchester City are also interested in the Switzerland international.

Zakaria has less than one year remaining on his contract at Monchengladbach and is free to speak with foreign clubs over a pre-agreement as soon as January.

Should United decide to pounce on the widely-coveted midfielder, they would be recruiting an established defensive midfielder ready to take the Premier League by storm.
