Praise for Manchester United has come from a very unlikely source.
Speaking recently on Sky Sports’ ‘The Overlap Show’, former Liverpool defender, turned pundit, Jamie Carragher has shut down several Arsenal fans, who questioned the current hierarchy in England’s top-flight.
Arsenal had an abysmal start to the new 2021-22 domestic campaign and although the Londoners have recently picked up their form, they’re still way down in 11th place in the league’s table.
The Red Devils, on the other hand, are very much in an early title race – currently sitting in fourth place, level on points with title favourites Manchester City, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have lost just once in their first seven fixtures.

During the show, when discussing the team’s recent struggles, Carragher told viewers what he believes the Gunners need to do in order to re-establish themselves as Premier League title contenders.
“You look at the team’s challenging for the league now and that’s where Arsenal are trying to get to, you need world class players,” Carragher said (as quoted by the Mirror). “They have two or three young players, [Emile] Smith Rowe, [Bukayo] Saka and [Martin] Odegaard – they’re not world class but they have the potential to be special.
“Buy they won’t all get there, they won’t all get to the level that’s needed to challenge for the title, so they’ll need to keep spending in the next three of four transfer windows.”
One Gunners fan then spoke up and questioned the ex-Liverpool star’s opinion.
“Is that why you think Arsenal don’t get enough credit because there is not enough big names in the team, not enough star-studded names that United and City have?” Pippa Monique asked.
Carragher responded by saying: “Why are you obsessed about Arsenal not getting enough credit, what is it you want?”
Paul Scholes then jumped in to back up his former rival and told the Gunners’ fans: “You don’t get credit because you haven’t got a very good team.”
Another member of Arsenal’s fanbase then said: “You mentioned United at the top of the show, but you didn’t mention Arsenal, what makes United a big team and Arsenal not?”
Responding to the latest comment thrown his way, Carragher then proceeded to tell the Gunners’ fans that rivals Manchester United are far the superior team.
“Manchester United will always be a bigger club than Arsenal, and they’re a better team right now.” the ex-Anfield man said.
Carragher’s comments will certainly raise a smile among the red half of Manchester – however, for the red half of London, probably not so much.
Both United and Arsenal are set to collide for the first time this season at Old Trafford on 30 November and it will certainly be interesting to see which side comes away victorious before the year is out.
