Solskjaer explains why he trusts McTominay and Fred partnership

It feels like social media is always bombarded with complaints whenever Ole Gunnar Solskjaer names his Manchester United team selection for matches.

I usually tend to see the reasons why some fans aren’t happy, but this season it has felt like a lot of Twitter Reds have completely forgotten that Manchester United didn’t sign a defensive midfielder in the summer — pretty much leaving Solskjaer with what he had last season.

That missing part to the jigsaw has yet to come, so the manager simply has to get by with what he has – and he needs to get an improvement from all his players. It’s his job after all.

As a partnership, McTominay and Fred is far from ideal, but we missed the Scotland international while he was out with a groin problem and he’s still working to find some form.

McTominay’s Brazilian partner is far from ideal, but his energy is key. It still doesn’t save us on occasions our midfield is being overrun.

“As you said, first of all, the stats for those two together, we’ve had many, many good results, the energy they give us, the way we broke up play against Villa, they’re very, very instrumental together, in that respect. Energy and desire, and I really like to have the two of them,” Solskjaer said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“They’re two who I can trust and will always give what they’ve got. Fans will always have an opinion on any team selection and when you have got good players like me it’s hard to leave players out.”

Ultimately it comes down to Solskjaer finding a fix for United’s problems in midfield and making the most of what he has. That is how he should be judged this season.

Three defeats in our last four games is a shocking return.
