Rio Ferdinand reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-breaking brace v Ireland

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has delivered his verdict on Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-breaking brace against Ireland on Wednesday.

The legendary forward, fresh off of completing a sensational return to Manchester United, featured for his nation and was once again the difference as they claimed a late victory over a resilient Ireland side.

Ronaldo endured a frustrating first half in the game, having seen a penalty saved by the Irish goalkeeper. The visitors took a shock lead on the stroke of half-time and it looked like it could have been one of those days for Fernando Santos and his team.

But the Portgual talisman stepped up once again and scored two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game to earn a hard-fought three points in their bid to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

The first goal, to make it 1-1, solidified Ronaldo’s name in the history books as he became the all-time top goalscorer in international football, surpassing Ali Daei’s record of 109 goals. In the 96th minute, the 36-year-old doubled his tally.

“Cristiano, 110th, 111th goals last night in a match-winning performance. The record for goals scored at international level for men – what hasn’t this guy done? Crazy numbers.

“And people are still doubting him, man. Can he produce this form in a red shirt for Man United now, at this age, 36? Top goalscorer in Serie A last season. Can’t wait to see him in that red shirt. See you soon,” Ferdinand said in a hearfelt message on his Twitter profile.
