Manchester United confirm Cristiano Ronaldo’s shirt number

Manchester United have finally confirmed what shirt number Cristiano Ronaldo will be wearing upon his return to the club. Ronaldo’s homecoming was formally announced earlier this week and now, he is set for another reunion.

Edinson Cavani has agreed to give up his No7 shirt, leaving a pathway for Ronaldo to pick up where he left off. The 36-year-old was handed the number when he signed in 2003 and will now look to create new history with the same digits.

Following his departure in 2009, the number has largely been seen as a curse among supporters. No player has been able to match Ronaldo’s form, although Cavani has done better than most.

As a result, the Uruguayan forward will take up the vacant No21 shirt following the departure of Daniel James to Leeds. The former Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain forward wears the number for his nation.

Ronaldo could make his second debut for the club against Newcastle on September 11, with the Portugal international released from international duty earlier than expected.
