Raphael Varane hails Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire as ‘very good players’

It’s turning out to be quite the week for Manchester United supporters. Before seeing their team comfortably sweep aside Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United on the opening day of the season, Raphael Varane was unveiled as the club’s third signing of the summer.

The 28-year-old defender was presented on the pitch before kick-off as a surprise and was met by a capacity crowd at Old Trafford for the first time since March 2020.

Varane took part in his first full training session with his teammates earlier on Monday and has now praised fellow defenders Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire as ‘very good players’ in his first interview at the club.

“I think they are very good players and I’m very happy to be a new player in this team because there is a lot of talent,” he told the official Manchester United website.

The 2018 World Cup winner also admitted that the pair’s Euro 2020 heartbreak will spur them on to be even more motivated to win trophies.

“I’m sure when you don’t win a trophy and you lost in a final then the next time you are more motivated and you want to win more than ever,” he added.

Varane could make his debut for the club this weekend as Manchester United prepare to face Southampton at St.Mary’s. Last season’s fixture saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side complete a remarkable turn-around, winning 3-2 after finding themselves 2-0 down at half-time.
