Video: Mason Greenwood scores opening goal v Everton after calamitous error

Manchester United are in action against Everton for their final pre-season of the summer, having had their friendly against Preston North End last week cancelled due to a COVID-19 scare.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a strong team for the visit of Everton, having welcomed back several first-team regulars in the week passed.

Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, and Manchester United’s England stars were among the player returning to the squad for training following injuries and involvement in summer tournaments.

Mason Greenwood has started all of United’s pre-season games so far but was yet to score but the 19-year-old capitalised on a calamitous error from Everton to score the opening goal in the game.

The goal was seen by 55,000 people – the biggest crowd at Old Trafford since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020.

New signings Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho are not involved in the squad but the pair are expected to be ready for next week’s Premier League curtain-raiser against Leeds.
