Late on Tuesday evening earlier this week, Manchester United announced that it has reached an agreement in principle with Real Madrid over the transfer of Raphael Varane.
The 28-year-old will complete a move to Manchester United imminently but will need to undergo a medical before a formal announcement can be made. Earlier, Stretty News revealed that all parties are hopeful that the player would travel to England this Thursday.
Upon completion of the deal, the World Cup-winning defender will be assigned a new shirt number at the club but is unlikely to keep the No5 jersey he wears for Real Madrid. Harry Maguire is the custodian of the number and the Manchester United captain will not be willing to give it up.
Varane wears No4 for France and it’s possible that he takes up the number at United but will need Phil Jones to vacate it. Jones hasn’t featured for United since the 2019/20 season and is unlikely to make another appearance. Should the number not be available to Varane, the next possible option is No12, which is vacant.
