Jamie Carragher says he contacted Harry Maguire after Greece arrest

Jamie Carragher has revealed that he contacted Harry Maguire after the defender had endured a torrid start to the 2020/21 season. After his first campaign at Manchester United, the 28-year-old was arrested whilst on vacation in Greece.

Maguire’s sentence in Greece almost a year ago was suspended and he was cleared to return to Manchester but with the media scrutinizing his every move, he struggled on the pitch.

The difficult period culminated in a disastrous first-half performance for England in which he was sent off for two bookings inside 40 minutes against Denmark.

Jamie Carragher, pundit and Liverpool legend, has now revealed that he contacted the Manchester United captain after the incident to offer some advice from previous experiences.

“Knowing how much support is around you is appreciated in such a situation, I contacted Maguire,” Carragher wrote for The Telegraph.

“We exchanged a few messages in which I tried to offer reassurance from my own experience of being thrust into the limelight for the wrong reasons. I told him to keep his head up and said that the current difficulties would pass.”

Carragher is often seen on Sky Sports poking fun at Gary Neville and is not revered by Manchester United supporters but it was, nevertheless, a fine touch from the former England defender.

Since that calamitous red card against Denmark, Maguire has recovered to become one of the best defenders in the Premier League and England’s heartbeat at the center of defence.
