Step aside, Gareth Bale! Man United star carries Wales in Euro 2020 opener

Daniel James was the star of the show for Wales in their opening group game of Euro 2020. The winger started their curtain-raiser against Switzerland on Saturday and was the driving force behind a number of good moves for Page’s side.

After a hyper-successful Euro 2016, Wales are hoping for another fairytale story to take home and have started well in a group there were expected to finish last.

The two sides went into the interval with nothing separating them, but an early surge from Switzerland saw them take the lead before a Wales side, inspired by Man United’s speedy winger, fought back to earn a valuable point.

James had his right-back counterpart on toast for the duration of his appearance, and will count himself unlucky to have been substituted. The former Swansea man wasn’t too pleased to see his number on the board, prompting hostile reactions from the Wales support against their manager.

Rob Page, who has taken up the role as manager after Ryan Giggs’ court case, insisted that the reaction was a positive sign and that James’ exit was due to fatigue.

Five years on from that summer in France when Gareth Bale acted as the talisman, Wales fans have been given a taste of what’s to come from Daniel James.
