Sergio Romero is one of 8 Manchester United players to have been released upon the expiry of their contracts later this month, it has been confirmed. The former Sampdoria goalkeeper has been a fine back-up and boasts a brilliant record in his five years at the club, but it has come to an end in sour fashion.

Romero, who has over 50 appearances for United despite being the recognized second choice, has not featured at all this season and didn’t train with the first team until late in 2020.

The goalkeeper is believed to be one of few players to have a poor relationship with Ole Gunnar Solskjær and David de Gea’s most recent Twitter post might just confirm the speculation.

“Good luck, Chiqui! I wish you success, my friend. You deserve to be treated well in your new challenge. Enjoy,” the message read next to a picture of the pair.

There is speculation that De Gea is hinting at Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s treatment of Romero, who is also said to have been unhappy that he was dropped from cup games in the latter parts of the 2019/20 season.

Romero was close to joining Everton last summer but a deal collapsed when United activated an option to extend his contract for a further year.
