Manchester United make €45m offer for ‘best Serie A defender’ award winner

Manchester United’s search for a partner to Harry Maguire is set to continue this summer with Pau Torres and Raphaël Varane frequently linked with a move to Old Trafford. But Solskjær has reportedly set his sights on Atalanta defender Christian Romero, on loan from Juventus, and according to reports, talks are underway.

Romero, who is yet to make his senior debut for Argentina, is a strong and quick defender who has qualities which would work well with captain Harry Maguire.

The 23-year-old is highly rated in Italy, with Atalanta expected to exercise their option to sign him on a permanent deal.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester United are seriously interested in completing the deal this summer and they even go on to say that a €45 million bid has been lodged.

Atalanta will trigger their option to buy soon for €16m and would record their biggest sale ever if United’s offer is accepted, surpassing the €40m when Amad Diallo went in the same direction.

Christian Romero won the ‘best Serie A defender’ award for the 2020/21 season and according to the report, Tottenham and Liverpool have also enquired but not as quickly and forcefully as Manchester United.
