Manchester United are close to completing their first signing of the summer as Tom Heaton looks set to join on a free transfer. The former Aston Villa goalkeeper will seal a dream return to the club after successful spells at Burnley and Aston Villa.
With one shot-stopper inbound, United will be braced for a tumultuous summer in the goalkeeper department. Lee Grant, United’s third choice, is expected to leave on a free transfer whilst Sergio Romero will do the same. There is speculation over David de Gea’s future but the Spaniard’s high wages will worry any potential suitors.
Dean Henderson has become Solskjær’s trusted number one between the sticks and it is expected that Heaton, who has international experience with England, would act as a back-up to Henderson.
Fabrizio Romano gave an update on developments in the latest edition of the official Here We Go podcast.
“Tom Heaton (to Manchester United) is a done deal,” Romano said. “He’s joining as a free agent for two seasons with one more as an option in the contract.
“The agreement has been completed. I think in the last week of June he will have his medical and sign his contract.”
Unless the club step up pursuits of other targets, Tom Heaton’s return to Old Trafford will be the first official signing of the summer.
