Opinion: Man Utd should target La Liga defender, amid reports of Atleti squad overhaul

Despite leading the race to win La Liga, Atletico Madrid are reportedly set for a squad overhaul for next season.

Cadena SER claim Diego Simeone is plotting several first-team departures, which could leave Manchester United on red alert.

Two big names tipped to leave this summer include defender Jose Giminez and midfielder Saul Niguez. The former has been involved in rumours over a move to Chelsea and Niguez has regularly popped up in United gossip columns (via Sky Sports).

Other players reportedly set to be sold include Sime Vrsaljko and Victor Machin ‘Vitolo’ but I don’t think either of those will be targets for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Also, if I had a choice it would be Giminez over Niguez. The Uruguayan was tipped for a bright future in the game but has stayed put at Atletico, where he could still end up with a league winners medal.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea have been keeping tabs on the centre-back since 2016.

Giminez enjoyed his breakthrough season under Simeone in 2014-15 after arriving from Danubio in his homeland in 2013.

A series of injuries as well as a positive coronavirus test have limited him to just 17 appearances this season, and Chelsea are also said to be watching Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule and Ibrahima Konate of RB Leipzig.

Atleti are currently one point clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
