(Video) Solskjaer admits not always telling Ferguson the truth about his fitness as a player

The best players want to be playing every week. The word rest doesn’t exist in their vocabulary.

It is the manager’s responsibility to ensure he gets the best out of his team, and I don’t think he would be playing every week if the medical staff thought it was a bad idea.

Rashford scored the opener tonight — his 20th goal of the season — and Solskjaer was quizzed about his forward playing through the pain barrier.

The England international has had a few knocks throughout the season but an ongoing shoulder problem is likely to require surgery at some point, with the Telegraph claiming it could be delayed until after the European Championships.

Reporter: “Did you ever tell Fergie you were fit when you were not?”

Solskjaer: “Yeah, I probably did. I think I did a few times. It’s not that I knew I couldn’t perform. It’s that I wasn’t 100%, but when are you 100% as a footballer? I think that’s very, very rare. Marcus… we know that he is someone we have to protect. He was ready and he was vital for us today.”
