Rio Ferdinand makes Man United plea ahead of derby against Man City

Rio Ferdinand has sent a Manchester United rallying cry ahead of this evening’s Premier League derby fixture against Manchester City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under mounting pressure ahead of today’s game at Old Trafford, despite his side leading City by a solitary point in the league.

United crashing out of the Champions League against RB Leipzig in midweek was damaging for Solskjaer, but his side have the perfect chance to atone against their city rivals.

And United great Ferdinand, who was involved in his fair share of dramatic derby victories, has taken to social media to urge his former club to keep Manchester ‘Red’.

Ferdinand’s tweet read: ‘Pls @ManUtd let’s make sure Manchester is Red this evening!’

‘Don’t be allowing the blue side to bounce around the streets with a smile on their face!’

Scott McTominay’s late goal elicited euphoric scenes in the Stretford End in the previous Manchester derby at Old Trafford, which was in fact the last home game United supporters were allowed to attend.

Of course, the game will be played in front of an empty stadium this evening but that should not undermine the enormity of the occasion.

United can rise to two points from the summit, albeit temporarily, with the Solskjaer’s fourth triumph over Guardiola.
