Manchester United target England defender to challenge Wan-Bissaka for place in team

A year and a half after settling on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Manchester United are said to be on the hunt for another right back.

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath reckons that Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier is currently at the top of the club’s pile of scouting reports. The Englishman left Tottenham for Atletico during the same window United signed Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace.

Trippier had an awful last year at Tottenham and it was a risk for Atletico, but one they will look back on thankful of the fact the went through with a deal for the player.

The England international deserves credit for moving abroad to a different country and challenging himself, like so many foreign players do when they come to the UK. He has started all ten of Atletico’s La Liga matches this season during which they have conceded only two goals.

This would give Wan-Bissaka more competition for his place but I was hoping Brandon Williams would get the opportunity to do that between now and the end of the season.

The former Palace right-back is the best defensively-minded full-backs in the Premier League, so I don’t think a potential Trippier arrival will make a huge difference to who starts every week.

Update: After publishing this piece we discovered the claims are being backed by Jonathan Shrager, a close friend of Stretty News.
