Pogba opens up on being benched for Manchester United’s big night in Paris

Manchester United star Paul Pogba was benched as the Reds claimed a 2-1 win over PSG at Le Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.

The French midfielder was obviously disappointed when he heard but his form has raised questions among the fanbase. It was also a strong decision by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and one that needed to be made on the night.

United stunned the Ligue 1 giants and got off to a perfect start in the 2020-21 Champions League.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with a penalty at the second attempt after Keylor Navas, formerly of Real Madrid, stopped his initial effort. Thankfully the goalkeeper stood off his line before Fernandes struck the spot kick and it needed to be retaken.

Anthony Martial headed the ball into his own net as PSG equalised, but United didn’t give up and struck again.

Pogba, who replaced new signing Alex Telles, played in Marcus Rashford whose winner finished the night on a high.

Speaking to RMC Sport, the 27-year-old revealed his introduction had been planned to help United win the match.

“We knew what awaited us [in Paris],” said Pogba.

“All the players were ready for this match — the result came as it should have come. They had chances, we also had some and we materialised. The result is positive.

“It [his substitution against PSG] was prepared. We had prepared well for the match.

“We know that they are strong offensively, and we had to block that. Afterwards, we started especially well and we had chances. [We managed to score.”

It was a big result for the lads and one I think everyone connected with MUFC needed.

As for Pogba, he came on and contributed to the team’s overall performance but needs to do it more if he expects to start these big games in future.
