Solskjaer notes United fans want the best players in transfer update

Ole Gunnar Sokskjaer says Manchester United are working on more signings.

Transfer deadline day is under two weeks away and I think it would be fair to say fans are becoming frustrated.

Manchester United have made just one signing so far this summer, with Donny van de Beek arriving from Ajax. The midfielder is an exciting addition who arrives with Champions League experience and as a Dutch international, but fans won’t be fooled that he’s enough as Solskjaer attempts to build on last season’s third place finish.

It doesn’t help that agents are feeding journalists with exaggerated information about their clients. When you consider the coverage Sergio Reguilon’s potential switch from Real Madrid got, it really makes you think whether some journalists bother to double source their information before running it all as gospel truth. I’m not in favour of ever hunting the messenger — but it doesn’t help when fans get excited seeing their club linked with new players.

Another player linked with United this summer is Thiago Alcantara. He’s joining Liverpool.

Sources close to Stretty News always played down links to Reguilon and Thiago.

However, Solskjaer understands that fans want more signings and better players. He gave a minor transfer update during this morning’s press conference.

“Fans will always want the best possible team to watch, the best possible Man United team,” Solskjaer said (via Manchester Evening News). “And that’s the passion we want and, of course, the history we have. We can look back 10 years or 20 years and you look back at the great players we have.

“For me, going forward, since Sir Alex left we’ve been averaging fifth. Last season we got third, which was a big step forward. Everyone saw the development in the team throughout the season, Bruno [Fernandes] coming in, Harry [Maguire] being captain and really showing leadership skills on and off the pitch. Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] was good.

“And we want to take a step forward and we can go into the new season with confidence, but we’re looking to give the group a boost and we’re working on it.

“Of course, we’ve done some business with Donny, I’m very happy and delighted to get him in. An exceptional, smashing lad that’ll give us something. I can’t say anything about other clubs’ players out of respect for them, I can’t speculate.

“We understand that to get even further, one, we need to develop what we have and, two, we need strengthen the team. But let’s wait and see if we manage to bring anyone in. I’ve been in dialogue with the club, we’re always discussing and, hopefully, let’s see if we can bring anyone in.”
