Bruno Fernandes wins prestigious Manchester United award

Bruno Fernandes has won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for 2019-20, following an outstanding start to his Manchester United career.

Despite only joining the club in January, nobody can say this is undeserved considering how the Portugal international changed the outlook of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first full season in charge. He was named Player of the Month four times (February, March, June and August)

Thousands of fans used the official Manchester United app to vote for Fernandes (35.5 per cent), who finished ahead of Anthony Martial (34 per cent) and Marcus Rashford (10.4 per cent) in the poll.

Luke Shaw won the award last season, but Fernandes becomes the first United player to win it after just half a season at Old Trafford.

Fernandes told the ManUtd.com: “Of course you want to win some trophies for the team, for the club and for the fans. But, obviously, I’m happy with the individual trophies.

“I know you can say: ‘Oh, I don’t care’ and everything, but it’s always important for a player. You always feel good when you win these kinds of awards, and I am no different. I am really happy. I want to add this to so many trophies for the club and for the fans because I think they deserve [it].”

Mason Greenwood got 8.3 per cent of the votes and finished fourth in the poll. This season he will be hoping for more minutes, along with goals and assists, with some help from new signing Donny van de Beek.
