Solskjaer’s transfer stance on Thiago as Man Utd monitor Bayern star’s future

Manchester United have reportedly been invited into a bidding war with arch-rivals Liverpool to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara in the summer transfer window.

Thiago is expected to leave Bayern this summer after informing the European champions that he does not wish to extend his contract which expires in 2021.

The 29-year-old has largely been expected to team up with Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside this summer, but there is no indication that talks have progressed with Liverpool.

In fact, ESPN report that Liverpool are currently refusing to meet Bayern’s €30 million valuation for the world-class midfielder.

The report adds that the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic mean that Liverpool would have to sell before making room for Thiago, which may mean that United could capitalise.

ESPN note that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is an admirer of Thiago, who has made his name as one of Europe’s elite midfielders during his seven years at the Bundesliga champions.

It is believed United will monitor the Spanish international’s situation with Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho remaining the club’s top target.

But after the club confirmed the signing of Donny Van de Beek on Wednesday evening, ESPN add that signing a midfielder is not a priority at Old Trafford.

However, a player of Thiago’s ability would enhance Solskjaer’s squad significantly and it would be ignorant for the Reds not to at least consider a move in the coming weeks if Liverpool continue to ponder a transfer.
