Manchester United are interested in finding a suitable back-up for star-man Bruno Fernandes and have reportedly taken the first step to finding one as they make an enquiry for Italian giants AC Milan for midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.
Calhanoglu, 26, has been with AC Milan since 2017 when he made the switch from Bayer Leverkusen for £20.97m fee, as per TransferMarkt.
The Turkish midfielder has endured an impressive season after being directly involved in 20 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions.
The 27-year-old is best known for attacking threat coming off the left flank, however, he is more than capable of playing more centrally in Fernandes’ number 10 role.
As the new season quickly approaches, United will be keen to ensure they have adequate cover for their star-man Fernandes who has been directly involved in 19 goals in his first 21 appearances for United.
According to TuttoMercatoWeb (translated by Sport Witness), United have identified Calhanoglu as the man to provide that cover as the versatile attacker can operate in most areas along the front-four.
The report from the Italian outlet claim that Calhanoglu’s current deal with AC Milan is set to expire as early as 2021 and also reveal that renewal talks have stalled which could open the door for a move away from the club.
