Manchester United and rivals Man City set to tussle for a centre-back this summer

Manchester United are looking to strengthen in the summer transfer window after booking their place in the Champions League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed the right players last summer and he needs to be trusted to go into the market again this year. The journey under the Norwegian doesn’t stop after getting top-four; now we move on and hope to challenge for the Premier League title.

While the Reds are being linked with big moves for players like Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho, they need to bolster their defence as well.

They will listen to offers for Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, while I’m sure they will do the same with Chris Smalling, who impressed during his loan spell at Roma this term.

A report in The Times claims United have a shortlist of four centre-backs whom they are ‘considering signing’. The names mentioned include Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake and Villarreal’s Pau Torres.

While City are being linked with a move for Ake, as per The Guardian, this report also claims that Pep Guardiola is keen on Torres so they could offer competition for his signature.

It’s definitely time they moved Nicolas Otamendi on!

Signing Ake has been made a lot easier after Bournemouth were relegated to the Champions League. It should now be the sort of deal that doesn’t take long to get across the line.

Even if United go out and sign a centre-back, with the amount they are seemingly trying to get rid of this summer I’d argue Solskjaer needs cover as well as quality at the back.
