Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba react to bump in the road as United draw 2-2 with Southampton

A win was needed to take Manchester United from fifth to third in the Premier League, but the Reds could only draw 2-2 with Southampton on Monday night.

A stoppage time goal from Michael Obafemi proved to be the important equaliser for Southampton, who took the lead at 1-0 in the first-half when Stuart Armstrong was spotted alone at the back post, as they succeeded in being a bump in the road for United’s quest for a Champions League spot.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side responded to the opener with two quick-fire goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, but sadly we sat back in the second half and had no rhythm in our passing whatsoever, so although the point comes as a disappointment it is what our opponents deserved on the night.

With just three matches remaining in the Premier League, United can’t afford to drop more points and we play top four competitors Leicester City on the final day of the season.

Solskjaer is trying to stay positive, you can see that from his post-match interview on Sky Sports, and so are the players. Both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, who started last night’s game in midfield, sent messages to fans via Instagram after the full-time whistle.

The victory has escaped, but we’ll remain united and focused for the next 3 games.

The French didn’t have one of his better games and was caught in possession for Southampton’s first goal, whereas Fernandes was quiet by his standards yet still managed to provide an assist as he set up another goal for Martial.
