Former coach identifies exactly what Man United need in summer transfer window

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes the club should sign a striker in the upcoming summer transfer window.

United are blessed with a young, exciting attacking trio of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

Martial and Rashford are both on 19 goals in all competitions this season, and natural goalscorer Greenwood reminded everyone of his supreme talent with a goal and an assist against Brighton on Tuesday.

Odion Ighalo is also providing more than adequate forward cover, and will remain at United until January after having his loan deal from Shanghai Shenhua extended.

But what United are missing is world-class centre-forward that is guaranteed to score dozens of goals.

And Meulensteen, who coached United in the Sir Alex Ferguson era, believes Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is the calibre of player they should be looking at signing to take the side to the next level.

“They brought Ighalo in as a player who could help United in certain times and he’s actually done very, very well,” Meulensteen told talkSPORT.

“But if you look at the other players there – Rashford, Martial, they’re not really out-and-out strikers.

“Greenwood, a young player coming up, it’s the same thing there.

“A lot of chances and goals can be created from the wide areas, Sancho is actually the same player.

“What I think Man United are missing is a striker of the calibre of Robert Lewandowski.

“Somebody up there who can hold the line, link play, but when it comes to finishing chances in and outside the box, that sort of player, they are hard to come by.

“Fifty million for Sancho, is that too much? For me, looking at what United have in those wide areas, is that where you want to strengthen?”

In all honesty, there are very few strikers in world football that share the goalscoring ability of Lewandowski and United will be realistic about who they can attain this summer, particularly given the uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic.

However, United do still require quality options to provide competition in attacking areas and a striker should certainly be high up on the list of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.

But we feel Borussia Dortmund star Sancho should be the no.1 priority this summer, as he fits the right-wing position perfectly where the Reds are currently lacking some depth.
