Dwight Yorke urges Man Utd to sign £50m-rated defender to send message to rivals

Dwight Yorke believes Kalidou Koulibaly would be the perfect central defensive partner for Harry Maguire at Manchester United.

Koulibaly is regarded as one of the elite defenders in European football and has long been linked with a move to the Premier League.

The Senegalese international has established himself as a top-class centre back during his six years at Napoli and is currently in his prime at 29-years-old.

United treble-winner Yorke believes Koulibaly is exactly the type of signing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be targeting in order to make a statement to the rest of their Premier League rivals.

“Without a doubt I think he’s one that everyone is after and if Manchester United are going to make some big signings like they always do, I would definitely [sign him], if we can afford him then why not?” he told Stadium Astro.

“I think he is the perfect fit to come into centre-half alongside Maguire, that would be awesome to have him there and suddenly we look a proper team then, with the likes of Pogba and Bruno and one of the holding midfielders and the front three forwards as I mentioned.

“We become a team who suddenly everybody will be fearing.

“But certainly with everyone after him, what he’s done in the Italian league so far he is a name everyone is after.

“If he’s one that everyone is after then why should United not go after him?

“And that sends a clear message that we are hard to beat and certainly with the quality we are possessing at the minute, for me that’s kind of a no-brainer if I were United at this stage.”

‘If I was Ole or in Ole’s position, I would be persuading to get him because I know how important [it is] to have another centre-half of his quality alongside Maguire.”

If Koulibaly does become available and decides to leave Naples this summer, it will be interesting to see whether United declare an interest.

The defender is valued at just over £50m on Transfermarkt, but his Serie A club would surely demand more for the signature of one of their most important players, regardless of the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic.

There is little doubt Koulibaly would make United’s defence even more imposing if he did make the move to Old Trafford.

But the Reds have conceded just four goals in their last 15 games unbeaten and defence shouldn’t be the priority in the summer transfer window.

Instead, we think Solskjaer should be focusing his attention on adding an attacker who is adept in playing on the right-side of the front three.

Borussia Dortmund sensation Jadon Sancho is the player most United fans would love to see at the club next season.
