Angel Gomes exit clears first-team path for Man Utd’s supreme academy talent

Angel Gomes is set to leave Manchester United after failing to after the club failed to agree a new contract to secure his long-term future at the club.

The attacking midfielder has been at the club’s academy since the age of six and is rated as one of the most talented players to come through the ranks in the last decade.

But unfortunately, his time at Old Trafford is coming to an end. As reported by the Independent, Gomes is likely to seek first-team game time elsewhere after being starved of opportunities by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.

However, while many United fans are understandably frustrated at the departure of a player that is regarded so highly, his exit can allow a smoother progression into the first-team ranks for another of the club’s supreme young talents.

Hannibal Mejbri joined United from Monaco last summer and is seriously exciting those behind the scenes at the club.

The 17-year-old midfielder has shone in the Under 18-side this term and has even been given the chance to impress in the Under-23’s.

Mejbri made nine appearances for the U18’s and represented the U23’s five times in the Premier League 2 before the season’s curtailment due to coronavirus.

The Frenchman operates most effectively in a similar role to Gomes and would likely have been behind him in the pecking order had the 19-year-old signed a new contract.

However, Mejbri could now be given the chance to impress in pre-season ahead of the next campaign which could offer Solskjaer food for thought.

Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira are currently ahead of the teenager, but one of these forlorn midfielders will surely be moved on in the summer transfer window.
