Manchester United are now confirmed to have missed out on one target — who also happens to be a product of their own academy.

Indeed, Angel Gomes has chosen to join Olympique Marseille following his release from Lille, where he had rebuffed their contract proposals and instead decided to pull the curtains on his tenure after five years.

One of those was spent with Portuguese outfit Boavista on loan in 2020/2021, during which he impressed so much that he was granted a more prominent role upon his return to Lille.

United were among a host of clubs — along with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur — mulling over a move for the England international this summer after it became clear he’d be available for nothing, making him a relatively risk-free signing for any suitor.

However, Gomes ultimately came to the conclusion that staying in France and moving to a Champions League club was the most suitable next step for his career. Marseille’s second-placed finish in 2024/2025 rubber-stamped their return to Europe’s elite competition next term, and the former Red will be hoping to play an influential role in their campaign.

Romano revealed this morning that Gomes’ ‘medical [is] ongoing today’. Assuming all goes to plan, he’ll put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Velodrome.

Why INEOS ultimately opted against Gomes pursuit

From INEOS’ point of view, their priority has been forward additions — hence finalising Matheus Cunha’s move from Wolverhampton Wanderers on the first day of the window.

They’ve also been in ongoing negotiations with Brentford to try and hash out a deal for Bryan Mbeumo, with the 20-goal talisman prioritising a switch to the Reds over the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Only after Amorim’s attacking contingent has been sufficiently bolstered will the key decision-makers then consider other areas of the squad to strengthen, such as the goalkeeping department.

  1. It will become a travesty if Manchester United’s hierarchy only concentrate on the offensive players, leaving the equally or more important position of a solid and completely reliable GK.
Trusting Erik ten Hag the last time around and who made a terrible mess and was sacked. But his mistakes are still causing the club so much misery after nearly three years.
To make matters worse, Sir Jim 🐀cliffe and his INEOS hierarchy have exacerbated the situation with their handling of the club recruitment, which left the club in utter shambles, luckily finishing in 15th position, instead of being relegated at the end of last season.
Ruben Amorim, despite his stellar credentials, chose to sacrifice the league and also lost the Europa League to Tottenham Hotspurs, who finished below Manchester United in the league and also have the dubious honour of beating them 4 times, twice in the league, lost in the FA Cup 5th round and to cap it in the Europa League finals as well. A win would have ensured European football next season.

  2. Whilst we need reliable 20+ goalscorers and a good defence and reliable goalkeeper I do believe that a good team builds itself around a strong midfield from which attack and defence emminate and that midfield has the ability to switch play reasonably easily and quickly from defence to attack and hopefully score more goals than what they leak

  3. Totally agree Utd need to upgrade their keepers.Far too many mistakes by both of them.Defenders can’t concentrate on their job if the keeper is unreliable. You can see them drop their heads after every mistake.
Alot of dead wood still to got rid of yet.

  4. It is obvious we need to sort out the forward line first. We couldn’t score to save our lives last season. We need a better keeper, but it’s not priority. Sell some deadwood and then we should be able to have the funds to go out and buy one.

  5. What utd is doing at the moment is the right path. Y simply bcoz we need a very sharp and efficient front which can keep always the back not think of even leaving their position. This automatically gives a chance to the mid fielders to add energy en pace and hence create a balance forgetting all this shit of looking at goal keeping and defence errors! If i may say this, utd needs not a defender nor does it require a goalkeeper to purchase. What we have in stock at the moment is enough according to the style of play by the coach!#

    1. I tend to agree with you bro but would still aver for a good goalkeeper . During De Gea ‘s tenure it’s now very evident his heroics saved the team not the managers particularly after Sir Ferguson retirement.

  6. As far as I can see, ManU need to recruit more from the academy with us fans accepting that including losses but hoping that we don’t get relegated come next season. We should not expect miracles such as EPL championships etc but to build a robust team that will stick together for the next decade or more.
There are a number of players who really don’t fit in a team called ManU.
The coach must adapt to the league environment not necessarily the team to adapt to his style, in the case of Amorin, three at the back!!!! With defenders we have including the goalkeeper, over my dead carcass, we will not succeed.

  7. Personally I would give Tom Heaton a chance as the other 2 are complete donkeys, plus all we need is to sign Gýorkeres and Osimhen as our main strikers.

  8. Erik ten hag was a genius coach delivering two trophies in two year even after no backing from ineos If we had him we would have defeated Totenham

  9. Get 2 new strikers and a top goalkeeper..keep Sancho who will be the engine of our midfield..And please stress out to our players to attack than keep passing the ball back . 80%ball possession but no attack.Thats utter nonsense…we need to get our glory days back .Tired of these liverfools keep making us like little boys .Go united .make us proud ..Hats off to Capitan Fernandez

  10. I totally agree with the path ManU is taking. However, I have to understand that there is need for balance in the team. Since, we are somehow restricted with funds to spend, I strongly suggest we focus on priority areas for now such as: the front line and few defenders to bolster the ones we already have. Glory!Man United.

  11. Man Utd players and bosses are just not serious.these players don’t want to play for the coach.chase them and buy new ones.chase that fool called Ganacho because he will never pass the ball.
