Manchester United dealt transfer setback after Rennes decision

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their reported pursuit of Eduardo Camavinga after a respected figure at Rennes revealed the club’s summer transfer plans.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need to strengthen his midfield this summer and that becomes a priority if Paul Pogba leaves the club in the coming months.

Reports suggest the Norwegian is keen on Rennes star Eduardo Camavinga, however, the French club’s executive chairman, Nicolas Holvec, says they plan on keeping the youngster this summer.

Camavinga, 17, had a breakthrough season for the Ligue 1 club this term and the Express claims that has attracted firm interest from United and Real Madrid. He is out of contract in 2022 and it will be interesting to see what sort of impact an approach from France legend Zinedine Zidane could have on his future.

That makes me think we should have someone like Eric Cantona operating in some capacity at the club — although he’s busy these days with his new Netflix series!

Holvec insists that Rennes will be doing all they can to keep Camavinga this summer and believe qualifying for the Champions League has helped their cause. The player will hope he makes an impression on Europe’s biggest stage like Erling Haaland has done this season — for both RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund.

“The plan for Eduardo Camavinga is for him to carry on with his progression here at Rennes,” Holvec told RTL (via AS). “With great things expected from him next season.”

The Rennes starlet came through the club’s academy and made just seven appearances for the first-team last term. This season, however, he has made 36 appearances in all competitions.
