McTominay discusses healthy competition for midfield place with Man Utd teammate

Although COVID-19 was a main topic at this evening’s press conference in Austria, Scott McTominay was asked an interesting question about the competition he faces in the Manchester United squad.

Matic took his time to perform this season and it looked like he was on his way out of the club at one stage. Since Christmas, however, the Serb has been excellent sitting in front of United’s defence but McTominay’s return from injury still gives United a deserved boost.

“Competition for places is so important,” McTominay said, as per the Manchester Evening News. “It can only breed a healthy environment and for myself you want to be one of the first on the team sheet. Nemanja is a great player and I can learn a lot from him.”

That’s the mentality you want young players to have.

Matic is playing really well at the minute and McTominay’s inclusion will only help matters. The Scotland international needs minutes in order to reach full match fitness. He has looked a tad rusty in some games since his return, but there’s really nothing to worry about.

McTominay has had a fantastic season on a personal note. He can now be considered one of the main figures in United’s dressing room because he leads by example on and off the pitch.

United have a lot of important games coming up, as long as they’re not postponed due to COVID-19, and everyone in the squad is expected to play a part.

The Red Devils face LASK in the Europa League tomorrow.
