Jesse Lingard has been ill and could miss today’s England game against Bulgaria.
That’s what Gareth Southgate had to say before the game, with Lingard missing out on Friday morning’s training session.
Lingard has come under plenty of criticism this season for his performances — and towards the end of last season, now going eight months without a single goal contribution for the club — so it’s not like he was certain to start for the Three Lions.
Leicester City playmaker and Manchester United target James Maddison has earned his first call up to the squad, and his form over some period of time warrants the nod ahead of Lingard.

Maddison would without question be one of my picks to come in next summer and take that spot in the United team.
