Manchester United have edged closer to completing the signing of Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Speculation has been ongoing since the summer began about Wan-Bissaka’s future, with United being the clear front-runners for his signature from the beginning.
It was thought that Manchester City would have made more of an effort to sign the future England right-back, but it looks like the 21-year-old has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford, which we can only be delighted about.
According to Duncan Castles of the Daily Record, the Red Devils look set to be closing in on what would be a world-record transfer for a specialist full-back, following reports United have agreed on a £55m fee with Palace.
Wan-Bissaka had an incredible breakthrough season in the Premier League last term but hasn’t done enough yet to earn a senior England cap. However, by signing for the biggest club in England, he’s sure to be highlighted on Gareth Southgate’s radar.
I think he’s a great long-term signing to replace the departing Antonio Valencia. And, most importantly, unlike most up and coming full-backs these days, Wan-Bissaka is well able to defend. He should be a bonus to the entire defensive department.
The Telegraph recently claimed that Palace would not sell both Wan-Bissaka and Wilfried Zaha during the same transfer window, so it will be interested to see what happens with the skilful winger now that his team-mate looks Old Trafford bound – the same position he was in as Sir Alex Ferguson’s last ever signing.
Hopefully, Wan-Bissaka gets more opportunities and proves to be a better signing than Zaha…
