Solskjaer explains Mason Greenwood selection vs Cardiff

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Mason Greenwood deserves to make his full Manchester United debut against Cardiff City on Sunday.

It’s the final day of the 2018/19 Premier League season and the 17-year-old will make his first start for the first-team.

The Reds are hoping to end a difficult season with a win in order to look onto next season with clear objectives in place.

Solskjaer will hope Greenwood can transfer his phenomenal form at youth level into the senior side, and next season the striker will hope to make more appearances or maybe head out on loan.

United should be looking to end the season on a high, but given how these players are performing of late, it’s not as straight forward as it should be…

Greenwood has scored 30 goals in 29 starts this season, as per the Manchester Evening News, so he’s definitely got something in his locker.

The manager clearly had no hesitation to give the youngster a chance in the first-team.

“I think so we have been waiting to play Mason,” he told MUTV. “He has been unlucky with a couple of niggly injuries.

“He has been training with us now for the last three or four months, he has been looking really good. He has done well in the youth team and the reserves as well. Finally he felt good and we started him.”

As a former striker himself, Solskjaer should be a good guardian for young Greenwood.

He added: “I don’t think he will be fazed, he is not that type of player. It is just natural for him, he loves playing football. So just enjoy the occasion, go out and express yourself! I’m sure he’ll do okay.”
