Video: Romelu Lukaku shows great sportsmanship by comforting PSG defender

Romelu Lukaku embraced Presnel Kimpembe after Paris Saint-Germain were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Red did the unthinkable to progress to the quarter-finals after a 3-1 win at the Parc des Princes. Lukaku netted a first half brace and a late Marcus Rashford secured qualification for the next round.

Rashford’s penalty came in stoppage time after Kimpembe handled the ball following Diogo Dalot’s shot on goal. A corner was initially given before the referee decided to allow VAR take a second look.

The biggest drawback with VAR is the amount of time it can take and we felt that in stoppage time when the referee added on additional minutes. It felt like he’d never blow the full-time whistle, but it was undoubtedly the biggest call this technology has made in United’s favour.

After the game, Lukaku consoled Kimpembe by showing great sportsmanship. We can’t tell what he’s saying to the PSG centre-back but it’s probably just a few comforting words to try soften the blow.

PSG have never entered the quarter-finals of the Champions League and Wednesday night was the latest of many disappointing nights in recent history for the club.

They will be back there again next season. No question about that.
