We have lost track of the amount of strikers Manchester United have been linked with in the last week since Louis van Gaal passed a comment on the secret target being a surprise and one the media have not yet picked up on.
Immediately everyone thought ‘interesting, who the fuck could it be?’ Then came reports linking the club with Juventus striker Fernando Llorente, formerly of Athletic Bilbao, who seem a bit off putting.
Llorente should have happened three/four years ago if ever. He’s 30, a few months younger than Robin van Persie, and not half the player we sold to Fenerbahce this summer.
However, Jamie Jackson of the Guardian believes Thomas Muller, a prominent Bayern Munich forward, tops van Gaal’s list of potential striker targets.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Jackson said:
“The one Van Gaal really wants is Thomas Muller. Having sold Schweinsteiger from Bayern to United this summer, Karl-Heniz Ruminegge said he won’t sell another of their big players to United so it’s a bit difficult politically for that one to happen. But I think Muller is open to considering the move, so you never know in football. If they were to get him in, I wouldn’t say it was a game-changer for United but it would be a pretty interesting front line.”
Jackson has recently wrote a book on Manchester United – A Season in the Red: Managing Man UTD in the shadow of Sir Alex Ferguson.
