Manchester United’s five unwanted first-team players will miss Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Leeds United in Stockholm, while new signings Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon have been included in the squad, according to BBC Sport’s Simon Stone.
Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have been told they can train at Carrington on Saturday as the search continues to find them clubs. Their combined wages are estimated to be about £1m a week.
Cunha set for Leeds debut
Cunha, signed for £62.5m from Wolves, is likely to make his United debut against Daniel Farke’s newly promoted Leeds side. Paraguay Under-20 international Diego Leon also travels after arriving earlier this month, increasing competition for the role of back-up left-sided defender.
Ruben Amorim has taken a 29-man party to Sweden. With the exception of injured trio Joshua Zirkzee, Andre Onana and Lisandro Martinez, all of United’s senior players have travelled to face Leeds. Young academy prospects Chido Obi, Tyler Fredricson and Jack Fletcher, the son of former United player and newly appointed under-18 coach Darren Fletcher, are also involved after being given new squad numbers this week.
Amass to leave on loan
Harry Amass will not be part of the Sweden or United States legs of pre-season, with the 18-year-old defender set to go out on loan to further his development. He made seven first-team appearances last season, including four Premier League starts, after making his debut under Amorim in March.
Amass was surprisingly overlooked by then-boss Erik ten Hag, who felt the youngster lacked the strength to make an impact in the Premier League despite United’s injury problems on the left side of defence. United have decided internally that Amass should seek valuable experience by playing first-team football every week, which would not have been the case had he remained at Old Trafford.
The club does not view the situation negatively and Amass remains highly thought of internally, although no deal is imminent.
US tour and Mbeumo medical
United fly to the United States on Tuesday for a three-match tour, and Bryan Mbeumo could join the travelling party after the club had a £65m bid accepted by Brentford for the winger. The Cameroon international could undergo a medical before the squad departs for the US.
