Following a mixed start to the season and several injuries, fans and analysts are considering how Manchester United’s winter lineup might shape up. We can expect a major lineup change in December and January, as three of the team’s players leave to compete in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The African Cup of Nations

After a whole year of qualifiers, the African Cup of Nations is set to commence from 21st December to 18th January. As Africa’s premier football competition, many players from across the globe return to represent their national teams. Not counting players on loan, Man United have three players stepping out this winter.

Club fans should follow these changes, so they can anticipate how the team’s lineup will change and how that could impact performance for the foreseeable future. This is especially the case for those betting on Premier League matches or the Cup of Nations itself, who may look to place informed sports bets based on accurate lineup details. Training, travel time and lineup changes will all have an impact on player/team form. For Man United, it means losing crucial forwards and right wingers, and a second striker in Bryan Mbeumo.

The Players Leaving for AFCON

The three players expected to depart are Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Noussair Mazraoui. Amorim is in talks to delay their departure as much as possible, to get the most out of them before the new year.

Amad Diallo gained attention as a key talent following his January hat-trick against Southampton. It marked a comeback for the club, with pundits seeing him as a great asset who performs under pressure, when the squad has its back to the wall. His absence during AFCON will be a significant change for the squad. Hailing from the Ivory Coast, he’s set to join the Ivorian national team as a winger and attacking midfielder.

Bryan Mbeumo is currently considered a leading option for the false nine role in Manchester United’s lineup. Why? Because the usual nine, Benjamin Šeško, is injured and may not return for months. That makes his forward spot on the Cameroon national team a concern, which could further impact Manchester United’s attacking options during several Premier League fixtures.

Noussair Mazraoui

While Amad and Mbeumo’s absence affects the attack, losing Mazraoui will also challenge the team’s defensive depth. He’s at his best in the back three, as the club’s right wing-back or centre-back. He’s also a versatile right-back for the Moroccan national team, and that’s where he’ll be for about a month, spanning late December and early January.

Notably, all three players primarily operate on the right side of the pitch. So, when they leave for Africa, the club will also have to contend with a lopsided talent pool to draw from. Amorim will account for this, obviously, but the same players leaving are the ones known for being the more versatile players on the pitch. The squad may end up spread thin, favouring a weakened left and right field over a lopsided one. Fortunately, this will be a temporary arrangement and, come late January 2026, all three players will settle back at United to play the last half of the Premier League.
