‘Things can change very quickly’: Journo shares what he’s now hearing about Amorim’s future on Thursday afternoon

Ruben Amorim is under increasing pressure to turn Manchester United’s form around – or else risk suffering the same fate as Erik ten Hag and his predecessors.

Two Premier League defeats in the opening four matches and a second-round Carabao Cup exit have led to Amorim overseeing United’s worst start to a season in 33 years.

Last season, the Reds recorded their lowest top-flight finish in 51 years when they had slumped to 15th in the table by the end of the term. That, plus their Europa League final defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, set in stone that there would be no European football being played at Old Trafford in 2025/2026.

In the aftermath of the dismal campaign, fans were clinging onto the hope that Amorim would be able to get the best out of his players and really get his system successfully into place whilst they had only one game a week to account for.

They’re still waiting for that to be the case, though. Meanwhile the likes of Thomas Frank at Spurs has already secured back-to-back league wins in his first month in the dugout in North London.

In fact, Frank only needs to manage five more league wins to equal Amorim’s record of eight in the 10 months he’s been at the helm.

What one journalist is hearing about Amorim’s job security

Amorim does retain the backing of INEOS chiefs for now, although it remains to be seen just how much their faith may wither if the situation continues as it is in the coming weeks.

“The feeling within Manchester United is still to back Ruben Amorim, so he has that board support, but it’s Manchester United, and if you have 3 or 4 bad games in a row, things can obviously change very quickly,” Ben Jacobs told The United Stand this afternoon.

“Within the Manchester United hierarchy, my understanding is they feel they’ve built a team good enough to at worst qualify for European football. Their best-case scenario is to contend for the top four or top five and the Champions League.

“What I do think is if we get towards the festive period, if the season progresses whether short term or medium term, and they’re not on course for top five, top six, Europa League at worst, then Ruben Amorim is going to be under pressure.”

  1. His current record would suggest this is not going to happen. A top 6 finish is way past Amorim’s capabilities. Too many ex players turned manager, coach, pundit are saying the same thing over and over again. His system simply does not work and to stubbornly stick with it he is cocking a snoot at the Club. Withering both Club and player progression and hitting morale. He simply has never been the answer and if the brains of Ratcliffe and the Board cannot come up with a Contract of employment for Managers that favours the Club they obviously are not fit to be in those positions.

  2. Amorim is way out of his depth. Man United is a step too big for him. His system worked in Portugal but the English league is of a higher standard. He’s stubborn and won’t admit the need to tweak his ideas and ultimately it will cost him his job and United are heading for relegation.

  4. Amorim isn’t a coach worthy the standard of Manchester united. We’ve a culture we’re used to no more story telling… His tactics ain’t working out… He’s killing our academy graduates gradually. The board is too slow and taking too long to sack him… Totally fed upup here in Kenya

  5. Excellent comment- He should leave immediately no compensation!
The players we have lost Dean Henderson, Elanga, McTominay, and of course Garnacho, all because they do not fit his preferred system.
Mainnoo and Amad seemingly next in his “no use to me” outlook; yet Huardiloa seemingly wants Mainoo!!!
The system which he will not change even when the opposition have sussed it.
He does not develop players and has no tactical nous other than his one system for everything.
    Results don’t lie.

  6. We don’t need amorim anymore sack him his system doesn’t work in England he is going to fail to give the good result

  7. He retains the backing of Ineos for now. That is what may cause irrepairable damage. 3 to 4 games is 9 to 12 points. I doubt he’ll be able to get more then 1. Combine that with loss of a month or two the consequences can be very bad.

  8. If we win zero games by the end of the month then he’s gone by Halloween.

This group of execs put the team and the club in exactly the same position as the previous exec team did to OGS. Instead of buying functional and needed players they brought vanity and marketing players to condemn the coach to the rubbish bin. The board are fools for not strengthening the midfield and after Amorim gets sacked they need to be sacked by SJR for their inept summer transfer business.

  9. amorin so stubborn, even if dont wanna change the system, but dont put bruno pairing with casemiro as pivot, better utilise martinez/yoro as DM combine with mainoo, than put useless ugarte all the time.combine bruno, cunha, mount, mbeumo as false nine,or sesko as forward. change bayindir emwith tom heaton.regret decision not to take on loan luis douglas and cheaper dusan vlaohic.look other team using 343 like crystal, atalanta adapt to 352 like inter, napoli, there are solid balanced team. why dont we challenge and lets us see, amorin take whole team at sporting before he last managed, and joint competitive english premier, cant he really survive? amorin fond of using the player he loves most, even if they perform below standar.

  11. Amorim is overdue in his role as Man Utd Coach. He should be sacked and replaced with Michael Carick immediately

  12. It’s no good having the players is the system isn’t working which it obviously isn’t under Amorin

  13. ‘They feel they have built a team to at worst qualify for Rurooe’ 🤦 With not even one decent CM and 7 number 10s. They got it wrong. Priority should have been Baleba and Wharton last may. No idea who was responsible but they need to sack the architect of this rebuild.
