‘When not if’: The two Amorim successors under consideration by INEOS with sack/resignation expectations growing

Manchester United have two names in mind if they are to part ways with Ruben Amorim in the coming months, whether that be through their own choosing or his.

While a manager walking away from the Old Trafford job would be unheard of, the coach has previously suggested he would do so if it came to a point where all faith in him had been lost.

Amorim told reporters immediately after United’s Europa League final defeat: If the board or fans feel that I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation.”

Fast-forward three months, and the 20-time champions of England have just been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two outfit Grimsby Town in the second round. As a result, they are vying in only two competitions, the Premier League and FA Cup, before the first month of the season has even drawn to a close.

Following last night’s calamitous showing at Blundell Park, Amorim again hinted that he could depart. He expressed post-match that changes were necessary at United in order for them to succeed, but conceded that those changes wouldn’t be within the squad, indicating they’d have to come at a higher level.

Who could replace the dejected Amorim?

Now, CaughtOffside believes it’s a case of ‘when [and] not if’ Amorim is relieved of his duties.

The outlet has revealed that the successors being considered by INEOS’ key decision-makers are Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner.

The latter made history with the Eagles by securing their first-ever major trophy, the FA Cup, in May. Palace finished 12th-placed under Glasner last term.

On the other hand, even though Iraola hasn’t led the Cherries to silverware in his two-year tenure thus far, he has overseen two of the club’s highest-ever Premier League finishes in history; last season’s ninth-placed finish on 56 points established a new record.

  1. As a passionate Man united fan I will prefer Oliver Glasner to replace Amorin.INEOS should do this as soon as possible because it is clear Amorin’s 3–5–2 formation is not working and it is making Man U to be disgraced since the arrival of Amorin last season.

  2. STICK WITH RUBEN ! THIS IS NOT THE UNITED SPIRIT ! Sell Onana for 1£ and bring in a new GK.

  3. I think it’s too early by far to call time on Amorim. However, I wish he was more flexible with his system (despite the fact that he has modified it already to suit players like Bruno). Watch this video for a good analysis of system vs player behaviour in the Fulham match:

(Because Stretty News won’t post links – they’ve blocked my earlier attempt with a Youtube link – you’ll have to manually navigate to Youtube, to the Manchester United Muppetiers channel, and go to the video posted a day ago entitled, Amorim & Bruno | Manchester United Tactics | The Daily Muppet).

Man Utd has, for years, had problems with player power and intransigence. After the Grimsby performance, I’d say that is still the case. Are some players intent on revenge for the way they feel they (or their mates) have been treated? Is it sabotage? Will a betting or pay-off scandal soon be revealed? Are some players doing it half-arsed because they’ve had a falling out? I wouldn’t be surprised at any of these possibilities. I felt that way a few times last season and also after the Fulham match, and not just with Onana.

Whatever the cause, Amorim needs more time and players that will back him 100%, every match.

  4. Amorim needs a proper general in midfield to boss both the opposition and Utd. Someone who will control the central midfield and not just disappear all over the pitch.

  5. problem is with a new midfielder we are one injury away from going backwards again then. The squad is paper thin with quality players who can play amorimball

  6. IF there’s a change (if) then Iraola for me. Turned Bournemouth (Bournemouth!) into a manic attacking side, which is what elderly Reds like me have been brought up on. Best, Morgan, Coppell, Hill, Giggs, Ronaldo, the list goes on. Now there’s a rigid formation with no place for a Garnacho or a Rashford. But patience for now: ok, Grimsby were severely underestimated, but the league is only 2 matches old and we have new players needing to gel and build understandings. And if we can only sign midfielder or GK, then for my money it’s got to be a decent goalie. The whole team suffers if there’s no confidence in the last man, you’re just waiting for the next highly preventable goal to rattle in.

    1. That’s, of course, if either option wants to leave their more-progressive Club and join The Damned United II

    2. Garnacho, hojlund, rashford and maybe mainoo how many more talented players are we going to lose because of this hopeless system? Get rid of Amorim now.
