Ruben Amorim U-turn: He’s ‘given assurances’ to one Red over his role – despite pushing to have him sold in May

Andre Onana will enter his third season at Manchester United retaining his status as the side’s No.1 between the sticks.

Indeed, the Cameroonian international has seemingly done enough over the last two years to convince INEOS chiefs that he is capable of aiding Ruben Amorim’s project at Old Trafford – despite it previously being claimed that he would be offloaded this summer.

Back in May, and towards the end of another turbulent campaign, GiveMeSport (amongst numerous other outlets) reported that Amorim had instructed the board to part ways with Onana when the window opened. Three days later, when he was dropped from the coach’s squad to face Aston Villa on the final day, the Old Trafford faithful were of the belief that they had seen the last of Onana in United colours.

It seems as though some form of U-turn has taken place behind the scenes in recent weeks, however, as United have opted against pursuing a new shot-stopper.

They even made an effort to squash links to Paris Saint-Germain outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma last night, with BBC Sport’s Simon Stone insisting there had been ‘strong push back’ from the Red Devils hierarchy over a potential move for the Italian.

Instead, Donnarumma looks to be Manchester City-bound.

What Amorim has told Onana in the build up to 2025/2026

When Martin Lipton verified City’s interest in Donnarumma, he added that Onana ‘has been given assurances’ that he will be Amorim’s first choice when 2025/2026 gets underway.

Of the transfers United could make before the window closes in a few weeks’ time, a ‘keeper is not a ‘priority’, meaning responsibility will fall entirely onto the former Ajax and Inter Milan man along with his backup, Altay Bayindir.

  1. Absolutely dreadful decision to keep the unreliable Onana, this MUST be reversed immediately, he cost us valuable points last season, he was 1 of the biggest reasons we finished 15th, he was dreadful, I’m sorry but I have no confidence in Onana & I’m sure that goes for the majority of Manchester United players also, you CAN’T have a unreliable goalkeeper in your team because they are ALWAYS going to be a liability to the team. Onana should NEVER have been promised anything when he is at least a 2nd rate goalkeeper, to keep this liability over getting a top quality goalkeeper makes 0 sense. Wait till he mucks up again, probably sooner than later, then he will show yet again why he should have been replaced at United this season.

    1. Well Amorim might as well collect his P45 as Onana can’t kick a ball as good as we were lead to believe in fact his distribution is poor.
Can’t collect crosses and his shot stopping
      is mediocre at best
Whey would you not offload one of your keppers and freshen it up

    2. Bring another goal keep before we get into further regrets…Bring a goal keeper who’s able to read and protect defenders as well.if you keep him, bring someone better so that onana can compete with him..Onana is a kind of chap who can demoralize a team..You could be winning but the guy can conceed goals in seconds…Amorimo has seen it happen..please don’t gamble over Onana…actually he should have been the first player to go…Amorimo open your eyes.

  2. Midfield addition is more important than the Gk. This will give the team better overall control of the match and offer the gk more protection.

    1. Well ,we’ll see how he performs, rest assured if the same mistakes persists..,Amorim knows how the fans would react….reminder to Amorim,Utd is a FOOTBALL CLUB,NOT A VOLLEYBALL CLUB.

  3. Consideration on flops is one pathway that leads to poor results. This is what is happening to man u. Flops were changed by Man city when Gardiola came we saw results likewise Liverpool. Why is our own case deferent ?. There are costly mistakes that leads to costly results. “THINK BIG” Manchester united. Sign Dano to challenge the season ahead.

  4. Should anyone now dispute that Amorim is unfit to manage United. He has banished talented player. Insulted them in public but wants to keep the person who should have been the 1st to be kicked out , after Amorim himself.

    1. STFU bro. Yes they are talented, but what is the talent for if they are not gonna use it for man utd

  5. Donnaruma should have been signed from PSG in order to keep Onana on his toe and back up.
Onana really caused Man Utd fans heartaches over his terrible performances last season

  6. From my observations, I believe that ManU is definitely considering another keeper, just not Donnaruma, whose current salary is in excess of $300 000 weekly. We all know that Onana has not lived up to expectations (he had his 2 seasons to prove his worth). I am looking forward to a new addition for sure. Maybe the club has prioritised midfield over another goals. I too, am not comfortable with Onana with the ball at his feet.

    1. Midfield shud be prioritize over the GK unit. For sure Onana might improve this season giving united a new fire front three! These sets of players would score for fun like the united front 3 of 1999 era mark my word!

  7. Onana; what a conundrum. He has made some incredible saves & top penalty saves. But I am never confident when he has to play the short ball out, feet or hand, and his overall handling doesn’t inspire me or his teammates.

I think RA has spoken with him and is working on his confidence.
If no improvement by Xmas it’s farewell.

  8. I’m sure United are very clear they need a better goalkeeper. This’ll just be a case of them thinking getting a quality midfielder in is a bigger priority. This is Amorim’s first proper transfer window. City and Liverpool did not fix their whole first team in one window.

  9. I comend the overhaul going on but keeping Onana is like putting the effort expected from the newly signed to an undesirable test.
We need a perfect team and not a trying team, we have had enough of that please 🙏
