Fabrizio Romano shares latest update on ‘world-class’ star who is ‘open’ to joining Man Utd

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reveals the latest on Manchester United’s pursuit of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The custodian had seemingly bid the Villans supporters a tearful farewell on the home fixture of the season.

Therefore, Martinez has been linked with Man Utd ever since, which shouldn’t come as a major surprise. After all, the Red Devils have been in dire need of a safe pair of hands between the posts, as Andre Onana’s performances over the past two seasons have been shaky, to say the least.

On the other hand, the Argentinian has been formidable for the Villans as well as the national team, helping the Albiceleste clinch the World Cup in 2022, as well as the last two Copa America titles. The 32-year-old’s displays for Argentina have been lauded as ‘world class’ by pundits and fans alike.

On Thursday morning, some sources claimed that Martinez is all set to complete a transfer to United who have accelerated their attempts to land the world champions following Onana’s recent injury.

Nevertheless, Romano insists that MUFC have yet to make any progress on this front since June when they enquired about the goalkeeper’s availability.

In the latest video update uploaded on his official YouTube channel, the transfer market expert confirmed that Man Utd have contacted the former Arsenal custodian on several occasions last month, with the latter expressing his willingness to join Ruben Amorim’s ranks despite the absence of European football.

United have yet to make progress for Dibu Martinez

And yet, this track has cooled down in recent weeks, with INEOS occupied in making other moves which they consider more urgent. The management has been negotiating a deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo for more than a month, and has yet to reach the finish line.

Therefore, it remains to be seen if Man Utd would rekindle their interest in Martinez at a later stage of the summer, or stick with Onana who will only miss a few weeks of action.

  2. How I would love to see Emiliano Martinez in between the sticks at Old Trafford. He is the perfect fit for a great club like Manchester United FC. Welcome to the club #emilianomartinez

  3. I am so disappointed to see United acting very slow in the transfer market as if they had a good squad last season. For crying out loud, this club had a nightmare of a season and the worst I’ve ever seen. Yet they are lazy in the market. It’s high time they start behaving as champs looking to improve every department of the pitch. It only proofs they aren’t ready to win next season
