Manchester United have had a second bid of £62.5 million rejected by Brentford amid their ongoing pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo.
The Red Devils have been actively targeting the forward ever since it emerged that he had prioritised a move to Old Trafford this summer, despite garnering interest from three Champions League-qualified clubs in the form of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. Then, United thought their free run at Mbeumo’s signature would be scuppered when Thomas Frank succeeded Ange Postecoglou and took the reins at Spurs. Frank was reportedly keen on bringing his Bees talisman over to North London with him from the Gtech Community Stadium, with Mbeumo also said to be intrigued at the prospect of continuing playing under the coach who signed him five years ago from Troyes.
However, a new report from David Ornstein over the weekend revealed that Mbeumo had actually reiterated to his suitors that he will only sign for United if he’s to leave Brentford in the coming weeks, therefore putting an end to his frequent links with Spurs — whilst also leaving the ball in the two clubs’ court to negotiate an agreement swiftly.
You can’t really blame the West London outfit for wanting to get their money’s worth given how irreplaceable Mbeumo has been for them as of late. Across 2024/2025 in the Premier League, the 25-year-old notched 20 goals for the first time in his career whilst also contributing eight assists.
What’s also impressive is that he was available to start every single league fixture; he played a total of 3,417 minutes in the 38 matches. In comparison, United’s most dependable figure, Bruno Fernandes, featured for 3,023 minutes in the top flight.
Such availability won’t have gone unnoticed by Ruben Amorim, who’ll already be plotting how he can utilise Mbeumo and his first summer signing Matheus Cunha to revitalise United’s front line next season.
Having the Cameroonian at his disposal in time for pre-season (training starts next Monday) will be hugely beneficial for Amorim as he looks to find his strongest and most formidable starting XI.
United face three of the typical ‘big six’ in their first five league outings in 2025/2026; they host Arsenal on the opening day (August 17) and later face Manchester City (away) and Chelsea (home) back-to-back on September 13 and September 20, respectively. They first lock horns with arch-rivals and reigning PL champions Liverpool at Anfield on October 18.
